A good sneaker should work with your wardrobe, not make you look as though you are on your way to a fitness class.

EA7’s new OTG, or Overtime Generation, takes the sporting codes of EA7 Emporio Armani and turns them into sneakers for everyday wear.

The first collection features two retro-running-inspired styles with clean lines, updated proportions and layered uppers combining premium leather, suede and technical fabrics. The neutral colour palette keeps them easy to wear and I like that.

There are already enough sneakers determined to look as though they could survive a marathon. These feel more like something you can actually build an outfit around.

I’d go straight for the contrast: wide-leg trousers, an oversized blazer and a structured bag. Let the low-profile runner peek out from under the trousers rather than giving it centre stage. The proportions keep the outfit from looking too polished, while the neutral finish stops the sneakers from taking over.

I’d skip the matching tracksuit. If you are going to wear a retro runner, give it something sharper to play against.

EA7 has taken a familiar part of its identity and made it easier to work into the rest of your wardrobe.

The brand says the range will eventually move towards more technical, performance-driven footwear, so these first styles are the starting point for a wider sneaker line.

For now, give me the retro runner with the oversized trousers. Leave the running track to someone else.
